Documents confirming Ukrainian citizenship
- Passport of a citizen of Ukraine;
- passport of a citizen of Ukraine for travelling abroad;
- temporary certificate of a citizen of Ukraine;
- diplomatic passport;
- service passport;
- seafarer’s identity card;
- crew member’s identity card;
- identity card for returning to Ukraine.
In order to establish, formalise and verify citizenship of Ukraine, obtain Ukrainian citizenship, formalise the acquisition of Ukrainian citizenship, or renounce Ukrainian citizenship, a person submits an application and other documents stipulated by the Procedure for Proceedings on Applications and Petitions on Issues of Ukrainian Citizenship and Implementation of Decisions.
Ukrainian citizenship is acquired
- by birth;
- by territorial origin;
- by admission to citizenship;
- by restoration of citizenship;
- by adoption;
- as a result of guardianship or custody of a child, placement of a child in a children’s or healthcare institution, family-type children’s home or foster family, or placement in a foster carer’s family;
- as a result of the establishment of guardianship over a person declared incapacitated by a court;
- in connection with the Ukrainian citizenship of one or both of the child’s parents;
- as a result of acknowledgement of paternity or maternity or establishment of the fact of paternity or maternity;
- on other grounds stipulated by international treaties to which Ukraine is a party (agreements on simplified procedure for changing citizenship).
With regard to the renunciation of Ukrainian citizenship, the following applies
- renunciation of Ukrainian citizenship is allowed only in respect of those who, in accordance with the current legislation of Ukraine, are permanently residing abroad;
- it is allowed if a person has acquired the citizenship of another state or has received a document issued by the authorised bodies of another state stating that a citizen of Ukraine will acquire its citizenship if he or she renounces Ukrainian citizenship;
- renunciation of Ukrainian citizenship is not permitted if the person applying for renunciation of Ukrainian citizenship is notified in Ukraine of suspicion of committing a criminal offence or has a court verdict in Ukraine that has entered into force and is subject to execution.
