The order is simple for residents of visa-regime countries. Their visas strictly fix the dates of their stay in Ukraine. It is forbidden to break these terms. By the expiration date one must be out of Ukraine.
Residents of countries with non-visa regime may stay in Ukraine for 90 days within 180-day window. During the check a public officer counts back 180 days from the date of the check and adds the total sum of days you spent in Ukraine. Their sum must be less than 90. Otherwise, it is considered to be a violation of the law.
In some cases, you can stay in Ukraine longer than the allowed period of time. This is usually possible if some kind of emergency occurred. List of the reasons varies depending on the type of your visa. For short-term visas and for residents of countries with non-visa regime they are the following:

- Taking care of sick relative;
- Applying for an immigration permit or citizenship of Ukraine;

- Registration of inheritance.
People with a transit visa can extend duration of stay in the event of unforeseen stops for the following reasons:

Holders of long-term visas may stay in Ukraine only if they didn’t manage to get a residence permit for good reasons.
